Built To Shine. Year-Round.
For David Adams, last year’s Christmas memories are filled with bright lights, smiling children, and the pitter-patter of Cougar Paws Estimator work boots on 187 rooftops across Birmingham and surrounding areas.
“2025 was our second year designing and installing Christmas light displays for clients,” David explains, “and we served more than twice as many clients as we did in 2024 (84).” While David’s company, Renew Exterior Lighting, offers landscape lighting design year-round, Christmas now accounts for more than 75% of the two-year-old company’s annual revenue — a number that’s likely to increase even further in 2026.
Needless to say, Santa has been very good to David. As was his recent move to MicroFlex.
Location. Location. Location.
“Irondale is perfect for the market I serve,” which is primarily Hoover, Homewood, Mountain Brook, Vestavia and Chelsea — but also includes clients in Kimberly, Warrior, Vincent, Pell City and Gadsden. “Being right here at 20 and 459 puts me within 20 minutes of nearly any place in town. That’s made a huge difference for me personally.
“I live in Ohatchee, an hour from Birmingham. Before MicroFlex, I had a storage unit in Lincoln. Most days I’d be out of bed at 4:30. Between drive-time to the unit, loading-up everything on the truck and trailer, and then driving to Birmingham, it was usually 7:30 before I’d be on a job site and ready to start work in the mornings.
“I was lucky to get home before 7:00 or 8:00 most evenings, which barely gave me any time with my family before I sat-down at the kitchen table to do paperwork. That put a lot of stress on me. Well, on all of us.
“With MicroFlex, I’m an easy drive to nearly everyone we serve. I have an office where I do all my paperwork. And I’m usually home early enough for some real family time with my wife and daughter.”
Lots of other options. None ideal.
“The main option I considered before MicroFlex was a storage warehouse unit. I looked at several, and the prices were close to what I’m paying at MicroFlex, but none of the units offered office space. Which meant I would have had an extra expense for in-town co-working space — none of which were located near the storage units.”
Check. Check. Check.
“Now I have all the room I need on the ground floor for our Christmas lighting totes and our trailer. Upstairs, I have the office — where I manage the business, and hold meetings with the guys on my crews.
“MicroFlex is a great fit for us, because we own all the Christmas lighting and decorations we supply. That way, our clients don’t have to pay sales tax, and we take full responsibility, throughout the season, for servicing everything we design and install. Then, starting January 2nd, we take-down everything and put it back into storage.”
Smile, you’re on Candid Camera.
“I’ve also been really happy with the security they’ve installed here at MicroFlex. Last year one of my guys ran the truck into our trailer. It was pretty obvious what had happened, but he insisted that he didn’t do it. Well, all it took was a call to [Property Manager] Austin [Woodley], and we got the video footage that proved he was lying.” You guessed it: That guy’s not with David any more.
“The other thing I like is the security of the neighborhood itself. I found that out personally when I came back to our unit at the end of a long day, and there was an Amazon package right inside the door. Well naturally, they couldn’t have left our package inside if I hadn’t left the door unlocked all day — so I’m really grateful I didn’t have to learn my lesson the hard way.”
Proof enough, at least for David, that there really is a Santa Claus.
